How do Hurricanes affect our Drinking Water?

Hurricanes create danger and destruction on multiple levels, and the impact on drinking water is one that potential victims should especially be prepared for. Common disasters hurricane victims are forced to deal with include power outages, destroyed homes, and flooding. Special precautions are needed for each of these circumstances. Since hydration is a life-sustaining necessity, ensuring a supply of safe drinking water is essential.

What about hurricane rain?

Conditions in a hurricane can be compared to sailing on the ocean. There can be rain water everywhere, but even the rain should be considered unsafe to drink. Hurricane water is prone to contain contaminants and should therefore not be considered safe for drinking. The following are a few conditions that can impact the quality of hurricane rainwater:

• While gathering strength over the ocean, a hurricane churns up salt water that is undrinkable.
  
• The salt water rain from a hurricane can cause corrosive damage.
  
• The chemicals in hurricane water are similar to acid rain, which means that atmospheric pollution that can harm the environment is in the rainwater.
  
• Particularly in rural areas, private wells and karsts can rapidly become contaminated by chemicals in fertilizers and other substances, when flooding and heavy rains in a hurricane cause high volumes of runoff from fields.
  __A karst is an area in which irregular limestone has eroded and produced underground streams, fissures, caverns, and sinkholes.

Hazards of polluted floodwater and drinking water

Contaminated water is a health risk that can be serious to those most vulnerable, including infants, children, the elderly, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

According to FEMA, the contaminants in water following a major flooding event can cause diseases such as cholera, hepatitis, and dysentery. Drinking water can be contaminated after heavy inland flooding has occurred, and wastewater utilities can also be affected.

Tap water can be contaminated during a hurricane when pipes break as a result of things like uprooted trees and washouts. Sewage spills can affect utilities, as well. Good water pressure is a good sign, but water is more likely to be contaminated when there is a lack of pressure. The low water pressure provides evidence that the water has probably become contaminated as a result of unsanitary storm water infiltrating water lines.

Case studies

Superstorm Hurricane Sandy that severely impacted multiple states in 2012 caused massive water damage. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more than 690 wastewater and drinking water utilities in Washington D.C. plus 11 states were negatively impacted in Hurricane Sandy’s destructive wake.

After 2016 Category 4 storm Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti, thousands of people suffered from a cholera outbreak connected to a lack of potable water.

After a hurricane, it is essential to keep in mind that any water could be contaminated, including tap water. Once you realize the hazards associated with hurricane-tainted water, it’s best to ask the right questions from credible sources upfront, such as how to make tap water safe to drink. Converting Units: MG's, MCG's, and I.U.'s

In the metric system:
1000 milligrams (mg) is a unit of mass that equals to 1 gram
1000 micrograms (mcg) is equal to 1 milligram (mg). 
An IU (International Unit) is a unit of measurement for vitamins and other specific biologically active substances.

One of the most common conversion enquiries from visitors to this website is regarding how to convert between International units (iu) and micrograms (mcg) and milligrams (mg). Commonly, people want to work out the amount of micrograms or milligrams in a medication or vitamin supplement.

I think that people wonder why the International unit isn't in the lists featured in the mass and weight converter. The reason for this is that the conversion isn't as simple as one might think. Let's start this article by discussing what an International unit is.
What is an International unit?

IU stands for International units and is a unit commonly used in the measurement of medications, vaccines and vitamins.

The volume or mass that makes up one International unit is dependent on the concentration or potency of the substance and therefore varies from substance to substance depending on what is being measured.

This means that converting between international units and micrograms or milligrams is not a simple calculation and we can't provide a converter to do this calculation for you (sorry about that). The exact measure of one IU of a substance is in fact established by international agreement for each substance ¹.

How to find out the conversion value?

If you want to find out how many micrograms (mcg) or milligrams (mg) are in one IU of your medication, you could contact your pharmacist to find out. As an alternative, you could try contacting the drug manufacturer directly. For a vitamin, consider contacting the vitamin manufacturer - their contact information is usually listed on the bottle.

Converting from mg or mcg to IU for Vitamins A, C, D and E

We've included mass equivalents of 1 IU for selected vitamins below. This information is from the Office of Dietary Supplements and the Ultimate Pharmacy Calculations Guide.

• Vitamin A: 1 IU is the biological equivalent of 0.3 mcg retinol, or of 0.6 mcg beta-carotene
• Vitamin C: 1 IU is 50 mcg L-ascorbic acid
• Vitamin D: 1 IU is the biological equivalent of 0.025 mcg cholecalciferol or ergocalciferol
• Vitamin E: 1 IU is the biological equivalent of about 0.67 mg d-alpha-tocopherol, or 0.9 mg of dl-alpha-tocopherol.

Example conversion

Let's say that I have a soft gel capsule that contains 500 IU of Vitamin A as retinol. To convert this to mcg, using the information above, I would multiply it by 0.3:

500 × 0.3 = 150mcg.

Conversely, if the soft gel capsule was described as '150mcg of Vitamin A as retinol' and I wanted to convert to IU, I would divide it by 0.3.

150 ÷ 0.3 = 500 IU.

The Process of Elimination. . .

It isn't at all a pleasant subject; however, many hundreds of thousands of people live with it.  The most common solutions are laxatives which only offer a temporary relief; whereas over time, years of usage -- can be dangerous to the point of weakening the colon walls and has a potential of becoming habit forming as well as an onset of a more serious condition.

"Inspirations" ... Part Three of Three

... um, w a t e r !?!
Continuing from last week's posting of daddy's colostomy cancellation due to a miraculous discovery of a new 3-minute cure for early stages of colon cancer ... And, to bring it forward thirteen years to April of 1996.

And a month earlier, in March, mama read an article in the Prevention magazine of some kind of special water that was healing Japanese people in hospitals.  Of bed sores, of diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancer.

That doctors in that Country sent their patients to the hospital to receive treatments with this special water called alkaline that had amazing healing capabilities in people ... that actually was helping them to get well ... but water?  Really!?!

After daddy's hip surgery the previous September, the next spring we decided to visit our dear friends in Naples, Florida.  Mama checked with both of their doctors who gave their approval along with their blessings and the trip was planned.

We decided to take the scenic route.  (We'd driven along I-95 many times and had often spoke of following Coastal Hwy 17 from Florida to the New England States, but this wasn't to be.)  We left Raleigh, drove to Greensboro and got on I-85 southward bound.  We kept noticing these unusual cloud formations but with the 8-Track playing the Statler Brother's music in the background and we chiming in with our own harmony's.  We were just enjoying this beautiful family time and not paying too much attention to the weather until . . .

As we drove into Atlanta and miles before we actually got into the downtown area on I-85, the weather began to change dramatically.  The clouds got heavier and darker and the wind got up and you could see trees bowing in the distance and debris being blown all around.  Then, the thundering began to roar and lightning popping all around and the small drops of rain actually turned into buckets and buckets and buckets of rain.  I couldn't see anything it was raining just that hard and fast and oh, it was so bad that I still remember it today.

Mama was in the front with me and Daddy in the back giving me their gracious comforting and sweet motivational encouragements; which I knew wasn't coming from them, but from our heavenly Father above.  How I held it all together was truly a miracle.  I saw a bridge up ahead and I put my blinker on and slowly pulled to a complete stop and under that bridge.  Oh my, I have never, ever, witnessed such a horrific and terrifying storm in my life.  Mama made the comment that she had seen these storms .. that if you heard thunder across the mountain that you'd better be finding shelter soon cause it'd be on top of you before you could count to 10.

The storm began to move on and the sky began to lighten as the rain began to let up, still heavy but nothing like it'd been just a few moments earlier.  Daddy said we could continue so we all began to try and find a break in the five lane traffic that kept coming and coming and...then, an angel from heaven came, held up traffic so I could get back on the road.  He smiled and waved as he went by and I had the warmest and most peaceful feeling after seeing this kind soul.  I knew that things were going to be okay.

We arrived at our friends home in Naples, safe and sound.  While there, mama had her copy of the Prevention magazine to show and asked if they had heard of alkaline water.  That in the article it mentioned that it had healing properties for those with not only heart disease but also had healed the Japanese people of many diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, even cancer which was rare in that Country).  After reading the article, they too were amazed and yet, none knew how to obtain it since it was in Japan.

Oh my, what a wonderful visit we had.  Got to see the children, their pets.  Papa Ferrell as they had been taught to call daddy from years gone by, helped pick out some chickens for their baby boy while talking with Mama Ferrell, which mama loved to the soul of her being (not having any grandchildren, these were special times for both my parents).

Prior to leaving to head back home the next morning, we had a grand opportunity to walking with our friends on the Naples Pier ... Oh dear, where did the time go ...?

We talked about that Atlanta, Ga's storm for years to come.  It was the most powerful and yet, no one was injured ... not even a single wreck occurred ... it was a miracle!

We took pictures of the Beautiful Sunset on that Naples pier that evening and everyone were in awe of it's glorious beauty.   So peaceful, so serene . . .

Unknowing to us at that time, would to be the last photo taken of mama ... she passed the following month, May 24th, Memorial weekend . . . complications from her heart condition at the young age of sixty-seven.

"Inspirations" ... Part Two of Three

As I allowed my personal and inner most death pains to surface and be written in this journal/memoir, memories began to flood my soul when my blinded eyes opened to just how important God's Creation of Water really is ... good, clean, healthy, cell cleansing ... hydrating ... water.

Back in early March of 1983, Daddy hemorrhaged.  Mama called Dad's doctor.  We were blessed to have kind-heart-ed neighbors who drove them to Rex Hospital.  Dr. Ashburn was there to check daddy in and begin the necessary blood work and testings.  The medical staff treated daddy with immediate concerns and respect; however, the three of us were in total shock to soon learn that daddy had early stages of colon cancer.  Anytime just hearing the word, 'cancer' ... the outcome wasn't good.

In less than a week Dr. Ashburn scheduled a Colostomy for daddy at 8 am on Thursday.   Back then, that was the best option available for this type of cancer, or that's what they thought until . . .

The night before the scheduled surgery, daddy's phone rang and it was a neighbor calling to share some exciting good news.  Keep in mind that the neighbor was a deacon at a local Baptist Church; however, we are human.

She subscribed to The 'National Enquirer' and was eager to tell us of an Article introducing a New Procedure that had been successful in 200 patients in over nine years -- the survival rate of more than 94% is at least as the rate achieved with colostomy surgery when caught early, destroying cancerous rectal polyps with no side effects and after these Treatments, most could return to work or continue with their daily routine.

Mom and I picked up the paper from the neighbor and arriving home dad's doctor was called.  He asked to meet him at the hospital the next morning by 6 am, as he went on his rounds, so he could research this information.  Keep in mind that this was only 2 hours before dad's surgery and forty-five minutes of that was preparations.

Arriving, Dr. Ashburn sat quietly in the hospital room reading the article.  Then, he turned and, rushed out.  Within 20 minutes he came back in with a huge smile on his face telling us that the article was true.  That he had spoken with Dr. Benjamin Sischy, Clinical Professor of Radiation Oncology in Rochester, New York.  (Dr. Sishcy passed September 23, 2000 at the age of 82.  Link for his life accomplishments and Obit: https://www.nytimes.com/2000/09/27/.)

The colostomy surgery was cancelled and the following Monday, Dad began his once weekly Airplane trips to Rochester for his first of Six Week Treatments ... "3-Minute Treatments Cure Rectal Cancer -- Without Surgery.  Daddy lived a long and happy life to the age of seventy-five.
A Footnote: 
     Learning of mama's continued discoveries in the Prevention Magazine of water was to the body, he soon made a total transformation.  Dad's doctor later shared that drinking water could have been a significant part in dad's recovery and quality of life . . . um, water?!?

Years before my parents passed; my mom particularly, wanted me to write about our family's life story.  About how our hardships of a life-long journey of sicknesses including but not limited to: colon cancer, heart disease, leukemia and others were overcome by the grace and mercy from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  However; writing for me wasn't to be at that point in time. 

Then, it happened!

I was so grief stricken with mama passing Memorial weekend of 1996 and Daddy's passing less than two weeks of Valentine's day of 1999 and seven immediate family members in that same year, that I felt as though I was going to burst if I didn't allow my anger of God, frustrations, loneliness, heartache and all the other inner most thoughts of despair somehow be released.

A Grief Share program soon was formed at church and I knew that was where I needed to be.  Although the weekly sessions helped, it wasn't until the teacher shared that by writing out our feelings was actually the beginning of the healing process of our losses.

So, I began to write and write I did.  I finished the 278 page memoir in eighteen months.  Found a publishing company who critiqued and offered suggestions and helped formulate into an easy read autobiography book. 

After a period of three years, Love Never Dies was ready for publishing.  Soon to follow was local and East Coast Book Signings, TV, Radio, and Magazine interviews which kept me busy and my mind off my loneliness but rather placed me back in time to a more happier, more fulfilling time with my beloved parents and pets . . .
